James: Those Brits and their Fiddleheads….
June 23 2011
Don’t worry, Chef Paul hasn’t gone on strike…I’m just hijacking the blog for a second!
I’m James, the Director of Marketing at MealEasy. For the past 2 weeks I’ve been hosting my parents, who are visiting from Wales in the UK (I emigrated here last year). During the first few days I introduced them to Fiddleheads. Chef Paul blogged about them a few weeks ago, and there was some contention on our Facebook group. Time to blog about them again!
Firstly, my parents had no idea what they were, and looked shocked at my description of ‘baby ferns’. Next came the inevitable ‘what do they taste like?’ question. Now, this threw me! The only way I could describe them was ‘like asparagus, but very different’.
It seems they just don’t get this wonderful vegetable in the UK, and what a gem they are missing out on! I served them one night with salmon – lightly fried in butter and garlic, and what a hit! Two more ‘Fiddlehead Converts’ in the world.
It just proves – there are LOTS of interesting foods out there that we haven’t yet heard of, but other cultures are devouring by the ton-load. Get out there and explore!
Okay, I’m handing the Blog back to the Chef now……you can catch his original Fiddleheads post HERE.
I can confirm that I am a convert to fiddlehead. James cooked a delicious dinner, serving them with salmon. I will try to find them in th UK, but I think this will be difficult. It just proves that even if you think you have tried every vegetable, there will always be something left to surprise you!
